Practical Architectural Construction (PAC) History

  • The PAC program began in 1971 as a six-week summer school program. Students learned construction concepts and applications through lab-based prefabrication projects. During the first two years of the program, students prefabricated house sections for homes that were then built during the six-week summer program. Twelve students spent the summer constructing these homes in the Abbey Springs development on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.

During the next 10 years, the PAC program operated in the same format in the development of the Sunrise Lake Camp in Bartlett. As many as 15 students participated in yearly summer programs during this time, constructing many of the buildings, including the main lodge. The Sunrise Lake Camp has been used by many of the programs in District 214.

In 1985, the PAC program emerged as a home construction program in which students built one single family home every two years. As many as 30 students were enrolled for two semesters to build an average-sized home. During the 1992-93 school year, the program increased in enrollment and students began building one home each school year. The current program accommodates up to 50 juniors and seniors who build one larger home (2,000-3,000 square feet) each school year. The students, working under the supervision of our program instructors, are involved with building the home from foundation to finished product. During this process, they gain experience in all phases of the construction trades. Local subcontractors are solicited for installation of the concrete, heating, plumbing, electricity and other trades in each home.
