A Letter from Dan Petro
President, Board of Education (April 2019 - April 2021)
On behalf of the Board of Education, welcome to High School District 214!
As a longtime community member and parent of six John Hersey High School graduates, I am humbled to serve as President of the Board of Education. I have seen firsthand the dedication of District 214 educators and their commitment to helping students discover their futures.
Here in District 214, our educators create innovative opportunities for students to truly explore careers, gain a better understanding of the rigor of college and develop soft skills needed to thrive in the workforce.
Through our nationally recognized Career Pathways program, our students have logged more than 2 million internship hours with 1,000 community partners. In a single year, students earned more than 600 industry certificates and completed more than 34,000 early college credit hours.
The program now encompasses nearly four dozen career programs of study, giving students the opportunity to explore careers from aviation maintenance to architecture to entrepreneurship to business management and health sciences before high school graduation.
As part of this approach, we are identifying and training the next generation of teachers in our Educator Prep program, providing apprenticeships for students in cybersecurity, HVAC and IT, and exposing students to careers in engineering and manufacturing with industry partnerships that help us provide state-of-the-art equipment in our classrooms.
We believe our Career Pathways program helps students graduate with a ‘diploma-plus’: It is an education relevant beyond high school.
Our educators are intentional in creating these real-world opportunities and have helped change the national dialogue on public education. In fact, our District helped launch Redefining Ready! in partnership with AASA, The School Superintendents Association, to redefine how students are considered college, career and life ready.
Redefining Ready! is a research-based, multi-metric approach to readiness that considers factors like success in advanced placement and dual credit classes; attendance; and participation in co-curricular activities. Since its launch in 2016, Redefining Ready! has been endorsed by educators across the country and helped shape individual state's readiness plans.
Our Board of Education is immensely proud of this District and all those who help to ensure we continue our established tradition of excellence.
All six of our comprehensive high schools have repeatedly earned recognition as some of the state's best and most challenging from U.S. News & World Report and The Washington Post, and every school has been designated a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
District 214 is lauded as a destination district because of our employees, students, parents, business and community partners, alumni and retirees. We welcome you to our District and invite you to see all the ways we prepare students for success.
President (April 2019 - April 2021)
