The John Hersey High School Curriculum is filled with opportunities for students to further their interest and expertise in both academic and performance based music. These offerings include AP Theory, designed for students who would like to pursue a career in the music field; Music Workshop, designed to allow students the opportunity to learn music technology and other components of the music field; Guitar - beginning to advanced levels of performance; Orchestra; Choir, and Band. All courses fulfill the District’s Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Band
The John Hersey High School Band program provides a variety of opportunities for students to progress and grow as musicians. The JHHS Band program offers several different programs for students, based upon ability. In the Fall, students participate in Marching Band, learning the intricacies of drill and music in a marching show. After the marching season, students are placed in Concert Band or Symphonic Band based upon audition. Percussion students enroll in the Instrumental Ensemble course. Students also have the opportunity to take part in Jazz Ensemble I class during the school day or Jazz Ensemble II after school, based upon audition. The various bands participate in many events throughout the year, including marching band competitions, school concerts, as well as national, state, and district concert festivals. All students volunteer and perform in the Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival, hosted at John Hersey High School every April. Students also have options to play with various small ensembles, audition for District and All-State Bands, and perform in solo and ensemble competitions.

Choir
The John Hersey High School Choir program provides a variety of opportunities for students to progress and grow in their vocal acumen. The JHHS Choir program focuses on building performance techniques, ensemble skills, musical expressiveness, an appreciation for diverse styles of music, and connectedness to each other and our community. Curricular choral offerings include Beginning Choir, Treble Choir, Intermediate Mixed Choir, and Advanced Mixed Choir. Students also have the opportunity to take part in Vocal Ensemble (Show Choirs) after school, based on audition. In addition, students may audition for our a cappella ensembles that meet outside of the school day. The Choir program takes part in several events throughout the year including school concerts, college festivals and clinics, and District festivals. Students also have options to sing in various ensembles, audition for District and All-State Choirs, and perform in solo and ensemble competitions. Show Choirs perform at various competitions during the second semester.

Orchestra
The John Hersey High School Orchestra program provides a variety of opportunities for students to progress and grow as musicians. Emphasis in the JHHS Orchestras is placed on the development of playing technique, ensemble skills, musical expressiveness, an appreciation for diverse styles of music, and connectedness to each other and our community. Curricular orchestra offerings include Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra. In addition, advanced string players in Concert and Symphony Orchestra may audition for and enroll in Chamber Orchestra. The Orchestra program takes part in several events throughout the year including school concerts and college festivals and clinics, and District festivals. Students also have options to play with various ensembles, audition for District and All-State Bands, and perform in solo and ensemble competitions.
