The Dance Program at Wheeling High School meets the physical education requirement and is open to all interested male and female students from freshman through senior year. Dance also meets the district fine arts requirement. The course consists of cardiovascular fitness days, improvisation, dance conditioning, choreography, and technical skill development. All students begin with Dance 1 (855) and may register for Dance 2 (856) the following year upon successful completion of the Dance 1 class. It is beneficial to participate in dance classes prior to auditioning for the Orchesis program. Dance 3 (864) is available for students who have successfully passed Dance 1 and Dance 2 at Wheeling. Students in Dance 3 are involved in a more advanced curriculum and have the opportunity to provide leadership within classes.
Orchesis
Wheeling High School Orchesis (857 Freshman-Senior by audition only) has a solid reputation for community involvement, creativity, the chance to work with guest artists, and choreographic and performance opportunities. Dancers in the program participate in local, Chicago, state, and national events. Members are selected in a professionally adjudicated audition the spring prior to their freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior year. All members must re-audition each year. Dancers are chosen for their creativity, potential, skill, and ability.
