INTERN COLLARS VALUABLE CAREER EXPERIENCE

Yadira Perez says she’s interested in working with animals as a career—and is considering applying to veterinary school after college. Last year, after a discussion about career options, Yadira’s counselor at Wheeling High School emailed her a link to District 214 internship opportunities.
“I wanted to get some hands-on experience in the field. I applied and then met up with the internship coach, who looked for a place that could host me,” said the WHS senior.
The District 214 Center for Career Discovery matched Yadira with Waggles Pet Resort, a local dog boarding and daycare facility, for a 30-hour micro-internship. “I really liked it,” Yadira said. “I got to work with animals—performing wellness checks, changing water, and giving food and medicine. I learned a lot from that, and know that I’m already ahead of other people in being able to handle dogs and read dog behavior.”
Waggles owner Ross Neihaus has hosted several interns from District 214 schools since he opened his booming business two and a half years ago. “We wanted to do this to support the community, but also to offer an opportunity for students to learn about working with animals—to help them get ready for a career in the field,” he said. “But it also gives us a chance to meet people who might work with us in the future.” He said Waggles hired one former intern as a part-time staff member.
“We’ve really enjoyed hosting interns,” Neihaus said. “The students that come to us have a genuine interest and desire to work in the field. They’re smart, with good heads on their shoulders—motivated, dedicated and reliable. And they bring so much positive energy.”
The Center for Career Discovery matches interested juniors and seniors with opportunities for 60-hour traditional internships, and 30-hour micro-internships. Internships are available in a wide variety of fields, with placements within District 214 and at local partner organizations. Students are not paid, but receive credit on their transcripts. For more information about a fall semester internship, talk to a counselor or student success coach, or visit apply214.org. Fall internship applications are due by April 30.
For her part, Yadira says an internship offers valuable insights when making college and career decisions. “It helps you decide if that field is really for you,” she said.
She sees a possible career working with animals as a way to give back to the community. “My parents are originally from Mexico, and we visit during the summers. There, you see lots of dogs and cats in the streets,” she said. “It’s my intention to go there after I complete my education, and help at a shelter or as a vet—to help people learn how to value pets.”
