The District 214 Education Foundation recently hosted a Prom Pop-Up Boutique at Forest View Educational Center, creating a meaningful and fun opportunity for students to access formalwear at no cost.
Designed to support students who may otherwise face financial barriers, the boutique provided a welcoming space where students could select a new formal dress for prom, graduation or other special occasions, helping ensure they can participate in these milestone events with confidence and dignity.
“Prom is such a memorable part of the high school experience, and we wanted to make sure every student has the chance to feel included,” said Joann Krestel, Outreach Coordinator for the District 214 Education Foundation. “The boutique was about more than dresses. It was about creating a space where students felt celebrated and supported.”
Planning began in the fall, with Foundation staff partnering with Mrs. Illinois 2025 Tracy Drost, an Arlington Heights resident, to bring the vision to life. Building on the success of a similar effort a few years ago, the team expanded the boutique through collaboration with local businesses and community partners, collecting more than 300 dresses, many of them new, along with accessories, self-care items, balloons and discount cards for giveaway bags.
The boutique experience was designed to mirror a traditional shopping trip. Students were invited to browse and try on as many dresses as they liked, and even received guidance from an on-site seamstress. Each student was able to take home one dress free of charge.
More than 100 students were invited, and nearly every participant left with a dress.
“The response from students was incredible,” Krestel said. “You could see the excitement and confidence grow as they found something they loved. That’s exactly what we hoped to create. An experience that feels special and empowering.”
The event was made possible through the efforts of Foundation staff and volunteers, whose work reflects the organization’s broader mission to support student wellness, expand opportunities and remove barriers to success.
Following the event’s success, the District 214 Education Foundation plans to continue growing the Prom Pop-Up Boutique, with the goal of expanding access to even more students across the District.
“We’re already thinking about how we can build on this momentum,” Krestel said. “There’s a real opportunity to reach more students and continue strengthening the sense of belonging and support within our schools.”
