Hersey High School Hosts Annual “Big Game” Celebrating Inclusion and School Spirit

John Hersey High School continued its homecoming tradition with “The Big Game,” an inclusive basketball event that brings the entire school community together in celebration of teamwork, inclusion, and school pride.
Students in the Career Life Skills program took center court for this year’s game, cheered on by a packed gym of classmates, staff, and families. The event is student-led, with members of the Hersey basketball teams helping to plan, coach, and support their peers throughout the experience.
“It’s one of the biggest events of the year. The kids love it,” said Dawn Schindlbeck, an instructional assistant at John Hersey High School. “It’s all about inclusion, fun, and friendly competition.”
Beyond being a highlight of Homecoming Week, “The Big Game” also serves a meaningful purpose. This year, the event raised more than $1,100 for Gerry’s Café, a local non-profit coffee shop that employs adults with intellectual disabilities — including several Hersey High School graduates.
“The Big Game” has become one of the most anticipated and heartwarming events of the year, reinforcing the school’s commitment to inclusion, compassion, and connection.
