Robots may–or may not–someday rule the world. In the meantime, designing and operating them for crowd-pleasing competition provide multifaceted and high-value learning for high school students.
District 214 students have been demonstrating that for 28 years through the District’s WildStang Robotics teams, two of which extended their season of success in the Seven Rivers Regional, conducted March 29-April 1, in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Team 111, WildStang, now holds the astonishing rank of #4 in the world, among more than 3,000 teams, after finishing in first place out of 56 teams in Seven Rivers competition. Team 111 compiled a 9-1 record in preliminary rounds before going 5-0 in elimination rounds. Team 111 also won the Autonomous Award, for best programming of the robot in the first 15 seconds of the match.
Team 112, composed of freshmen and sophomores, finished the preliminaries in Wisconsin with a 5-5 record, good for 21st place. They finished 2-2 in elimination matches and also won the Excellence in Engineering Award.
Earlier in March, Team 111 captured first place in the Midwest Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
All of the designing, engineering, problem-solving, project management and collaboration required to build and operate robots will again be on display when Team 111 competes in the World Championship in Houston, April 19-22.
