Hundreds of educators gather at District 214 to see college and career readiness in action

More than 200 educators from across the country visited High School District 214 this month for the first Redefining Ready! National Summit.

The summit on Monday, October 1 highlighted all the ways District 214 is preparing students for success, including through innovative curriculum, opportunities to earn dual credit and participate in internships, and building partnerships with local businesses and industries.

Educators from District 214 led sessions throughout the morning. Later in the day, participants visited each of the District’s schools, hearing from students and staff how real-world learning experiences are infused into the career pathways curriculum.

The summit was hosted by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, and District 214.

“AASA is championing the critical issue of redefining college and career ready standards so our high school graduates can effectively pursue their post-secondary goals with confidence,” said Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of AASA. “We are pleased that AASA members are coming together to help create successful models of engaging real-life workplace situations on behalf of our students. We are grateful to High School District 214 for serving as the host site for our summit.”

Launched two years ago by AASA, the Redefining Ready! initiative introduces new research-based metrics to more appropriately assess whether students are ready to pursue their lifelong goals and dreams following post-secondary education.

“Redefining Ready! is changing the narrative about how students are learning and demonstrating their knowledge,” said Dr. David R. Schuler, superintendent of District 214 and the AASA 2018 National Superintendent of the Year. “The outstanding school system leaders joining us for this meeting realize the responsibility we have as educators to change the trajectory of our students’ journeys and dreams beyond high school so they can be productive citizens of society.”
