John Hersey High School is getting ready for its first Dance Marathon on Saturday. March 9.

The Dance Marathon event is organized by students in Hersey’s Service Over Self (SOS) class and raises money for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Hersey seniors Anshu Jacob and Megan Caulfield are leading the cause.

Jacob and Caulfield are both on the school’s track team and thought of this fundraising event after learning about Benny’s World, a non-profit foundation to fund research to cure pediatric stem cancer, from their track coach, James Miks. Jacob also saw a Dance Marathon event at Niles North High School.

Eventually, the two seniors brought the idea to the school’s SOS teacher, Mark Gunther, to host a Dance Marathon.

Hersey students are raising money individually through donation sites provided by the Children’s Miracle Network. Money raised by the students will help families that can’t afford treatment for their children. The money will also help children in hospitals, such as Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and provide better treatments for children.
