IHSA State Bowling

On February 16, sophomore Sonia Sanchez-Carrillo and freshman Natalia Villegas competed at the IHSA state bowling tournament in Rockford. Natalia and Sonia qualified for the state tournament by finishing in first and second place, respectively, at regionals. Then at state, Natalia finished in second place and Sonia finished in third place.

John Hersey High School

Illinois Congressional Debate Association All-State

The Illinois Congressional Debate Association All-State is one of the most coveted debate awards, because it is based on total performance over the entire season. The winner has to be “on” every single week. More than 700 students compete in the ICDA circuit, and junior Olivia Bell earned a spot among the 10 best in the entire league. Olivia is only the fifth Hersey student to have captured this award.

IHSA State Swim and Dive

At this year's IHSA swim and dive state meet, the team of senior Nick Nocita, junior Gavin Hill and freshman Noah Thomas placed third in the Combined Division. Additionally, Noah earned four state swim medals -- fourth place in the 100-yard Athletes With Disabilities breaststroke and fifth place in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Nick placed 12th in diving and Gavin placed 18th in the 100-yard freestyle and 15th in the 50-yard freestyle. This is the first state trophy for Hersey aquatics and the first aquatic state trophy for District 214.

Prospect High School

IHSA State Speech

At the IHSA state speech championship, seniors Katherine Jordan and Emmett Knee achieved first place in Dramatic Duet in Acting with their piece, “Love, Will.” The speech championships were held at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria on February 15 and 16. Out of 77 high school teams that qualified, Prospect High School finished in 10th place overall. Additionally, Emmett finished in third place in the state in Oratorical Declamation.

Illinois Journalist of the Year

Senior Ayse Eldes has been named the 2019 Illinois Journalist of the Year by the Illinois Journalism Education Association. This is a tremendous honor that is based on a portfolio of work Ayse put together from her four years in Prospect's journalism program -- most notably her stories on Turkish immigrants coming to Prospect and the District 57 referendum -- as well as the editing skills and leadership she has provided the school newspaper. Ayse will now represent Illinois in the national Journalist of the Year competition, with winner being announced in April.

Rolling Meadows High School

IHSA State Gymnastics

Junior Nicole Kane placed second on the uneven parallel bars at the IHSA state gymnastics meet February 15 and 16 at Palatine High School. After qualifying through regionals and sectionals, she was one of 33 athletes that qualified for the uneven parallel bars. After the preliminary competition, Nicole finished in the top 10 and qualified for finals. Last school year, after finishing third place in this same event, Nicole’s goal was not only to return to the IHSA State meet, but to be a state champion or improve her placement from last year. She accomplished her goal by earning a 9.475 score and placing second
