Board recognizes student achievements

At its Thursday meeting, the Board of Education honored students who had received state recognition. View photos of the recognized students here.

Honored students were:

IMEA All-State Honors Band

Buffalo Grove High School junior Brendan Altieri was among the student-musicians chosen for the Illinois Music Educators Association's All-State Honors Band. He placed seventh chair trombone in the ensemble. Students chosen to participate in the IMEA All-State Honors ensembles represent the very highest percentage of student musicians in the state. Nearly two dozen District 214 students, representing all six of our high schools, were chosen for these elite ensembles. Many

of the other student-musicians were honored at an earlier Board meeting.

IHSA Individual Events Speech - Elk Grove High School

On their journey to the IHSA State Speech Competition, Alex Diez, an Elk Grove senior, and Nicholas Filca, an Elk Grove sophomore, placed second at their regional and second at their sectional. At state, they finished fourth in the final round in their category of Humorous Duet Acting. Alex is a two-year speech team member and Nicholas is in his first year on

the team.

IHSA Individual Events Speech - Prospect High School

James Farquharson, a Prospect senior, has qualified for state three consecutive years. This year, he finished second in the state in Prose Reading - outperforming his fifth-place finish in that category last year.

Allison O'Connor, a Prospect senior, has qualified for state two years in a row. This year, she competed in the Special Occasion Speaking category. Her comedic approach to looking at mob mentality earned her third in the state.

Andrew Pittman, a junior, has qualified for state each of the three years he's been on the team. This year, he competed in Original Comedy and finished fifth in the state.

IHSA Performance in the Round

The Prospect High School Performance in the Round team, under the direction of Robert Shellard and Jeremy Morton, was crowned both regional and sectional champions before heading to the IHSA state speech competition, where the group took third place for its outstanding performance of "Spring Awakening" - recreating a full-length musical in

15 minutes.

Team members are Michael Alicoate, Pooja Bahl, Natalie Carioti, Anthony Ciero, Grace Gadow, Nina Gary, Abby Grott, Lillian Hermes, Ashley Kmiec, Ryan Kopp, Maggie Martorano, Megan McLaughlin, Alyssa O'Connell, Adrian Politzer, Luis Rodriguez, Micki Smolenski, Jesse Sykes, Elyse Wachsmuth, Maggie Ward and John Zach.

IHSA State Gymnastics

Maddie Larock, a Prospect High School senior, finished second in the all-around competition at the IHSA Gymnastics State Finals. Maddie has been featured in gymnastics magazines, served as a role model for peers and set goals

of competing at Level 10 Nationals and in NCAA Women's Gymnastics. She will leave Prospect as its all-around record-holder and most-decorated gymnast.
