Remote Learning Plan
Information for Parents
We know these are challenging times for our families. We also recognize the need for students to continue engaging with each other. We are here to support you and your students as we do our best to offer opportunities for ongoing learning and connection across the District 214 community. Remote instruction will begin on Monday, March 30 and staff will begin engaging with students regularly.
As it currently stands, the Illinois State Board of Education has designated the remainder of the time during mandatory school closures as opportunities for remote instruction. The primary purpose of remote instruction is to provide social-emotional support along with opportunities to improve a student’s academic standing.
We want to ensure all students earn credit in their coursework to stay on track for graduation and early college credit, with a particular emphasis on seniors who must pass their course load to remain eligible for college admittance and high school graduation. Our teachers also want students to be ready for Advanced Placement exams, as the College Board has announced testing will be facilitated online.
Over the course of the past few weeks, our staff have been preparing to transition to this remote instructional environment. Many staff have already begun engaging with students to provide social-emotional support, academic experiences and postsecondary counseling. They also have been working to digitize their course materials and create opportunities for students to receive academic support.
We recognize that students will have distractions in this remote instructional environment, and we simply ask that everyone engage to the best of their abilities. While our focus is certainly on our students, we also know many of you may be facing your own challenges during this time. As our superintendent has stated, please do not hesitate to reach out when you need us. All our staff are here and ready to assist you and your family in any way we can.
What happens during remote instruction?
During a remote instructional day students will log in to each course and review any communication from their teachers via email or Schoology. They may participate in scheduled real-time video conferencing during the scheduled class times. The primary focus of these student engagements will be to support the social-emotional well-being of our students as well as provide opportunities for academic recovery and enrichment. Students will work independently or in groups to complete assignments to meet course outcomes or improve their academic standing.
How will remote instruction affect my student’s grades?
The Illinois State Board of Education recommends that any student work completed during the mandated statewide school closure not count negatively toward student grades or a student’s academic standing. It is our primary goal during this time to ensure all students stay on track for graduation and earn early college credit, with a particular emphasis on seniors who must pass their current course load to remain eligible for college admittance and high school graduation. Toward that aim, students will have opportunities to show mastery of previously taught content and complete assignments to improve their academic standing.
What if my child has an IEP or 504 Plan?
Students who have an IEP or 504 services can expect, to the greatest extent possible, that services and accommodations will be in place. Special Education teams will use virtual formats to provide access to related services for continuity of services. These could look different than they would in a typical school day. If you have questions about your student’s plan, please email their case manager.
How can I support my student?
Let your school know immediately if your student does not have access to the internet. Encourage him/her to review and respond to any communication from their teacher via email or Schoology daily. They will be invited to participate in real-time video conferencing during the scheduled class periods. Review the Video Conferencing Expectations with your child and encourage them to complete any assignments. Finally, don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.
How will my student’s social and emotional needs be supported during remote instruction?
Our student services staff will continue to facilitate groups and be available for appointments with students on their caseload. If your student is in need of support from a counselor or one of our specialists, please inform your student’s counselor or related service member.

What should I do if my student’s technology does not work?

Video Conferencing Expectations for Students
During this time when schools are closed, there are many benefits to video conferencing to stay connected with classmates and engage in instructional activities. However, there are some essential requirements for students to keep in mind.
- Use WIFI. Using cellular data when video conferencing can quickly consume large amounts of data, unless you have an unlimited data plan, find a WIFI connection.
- Camera on or off? You choose when and if you want your camera on or off. When your camera is on, ensure you are dressed appropriately for school and you are aware of anything in the background that all could see when the video is on.
- This class may be recorded. Not everyone in your class can join during the scheduled time and the teacher may record the session to post for students to access at a later time.
- Mute yourself when not speaking. There is lots of background noise that may be distracting to the class. Remember that during both check-ins and instructional time you are in the presence of teachers and classmates. Whatever is happening behind you can be heard.
- Be flexible and understanding. Your classmates and your teachers may have pets or younger children at home. Recognize that everyone is doing the best they can under these circumstances.
- Be kind and observant. We can’t know all the challenges each of us is facing and we all handle this stress differently. Stay connected with your friends and let an adult know if you or a peer is in need.
- All the rules apply. When you’re in class, you’re in school. Behavior during remote instruction on discussion boards or video conferencing should reflect the same expectations as in the classroom, and the same disciplinary consequences may still occur including being removed from video conferencing by the teacher.
How can I access the internet?
For students who do not have access to the internet at home, Comcast is offering new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service.
- Free Internet Information from Comcast
- Comcast will send all new customers a free self-install kit that includes a cable modem with a Wi-Fi router. There will be no term contract or credit check and no shipping fee.
- To sign up, applicants can simply visit www.internetessentials.com. The accessible website also includes the option to video chat with customer service agents in American Sign Language. There are also two dedicated phone numbers 1-855-846-8376 for English and 1-855-765-6995 for Spanish.
