Thirty Show Choirs to Participate in Hersey’s Chicagoland Showcase Show Choir Competition
February 24, 2014
On Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, nearly 30 of the best middle and high school show choirs from five states will converge at John Hersey High School for the 21st annual Chicagoland Showcase Show Choir Competition. The two-day event will host a variety of singing and dancing talent in four categories of competition. Hersey is located at 1900 E. Thomas in Arlington Heights.
Starting at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, the middle school show choirs will take center stage. At 6 p.m., some of the top high school choirs in the area will compete in the Choir Division. There will be a special appearance by An Octave Above, a versatile a cappella group based out of Chicago. An Octave Above has been featured in the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts with the DuPage Jazz Band, Michael Lerich and his orchestra, and three times with the Elgin Symphony’s "Home for the Holiday’s Spectacular."
On March 1, show choirs from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, and California will take the stage in this competition, which kicks off at 8 a.m. At 7:30 p.m., the top six groups from the day will compete head-to-head in the final round to see who will be named Chicagoland Showcase Grand Champion.
In addition to the group competition, there also will be a solo competition. Over 50 high school students will perform individually during the day to be named the top male and female soloists. The two winners will perform prior to the final round at 7:20 p.m.
Tickets for individual rounds are $10; $7 for senior citizens and students with an ID. An all-day pass costs $15; $10 for senior citizens and students with an ID. An all-weekend pass that provides admission to all of these competitions is $20; $10 for senior citizens and students with an id. A ticket to see just An Octave Above is $5.
