Reading Strategies for Content Area Teachers

The purpose of these webpages is to provide staff working on reading as an NCA goal with strategies they could use in their classroom to encourage growth in reading in their particular content area. Most strategies are adapted from the text Reading in the Content Areas If not me, then who? by Rachel Billmeyer published by McCrel. These strategies have been adapted and taught in the course Content Area Reading Strategies offered through Aurora University in District 214.

Along with the explanations of strategies I have also provided samples of content area reading tasks some created by students who have taken the Aurora class.

Besides these strategies this site also offer links to other sources which contain ideas to improve comprehension skills. In all honesty web sites which speak to reading skills at the high school level are somewhat scarce; however, with Lisa Mackie's (reading teacher at BGHS) help I was able to compile the list.

Preactive (prereading)

Interactive (during reading)
