Fundraising Executive Appointed to District 214 Education Foundation Board

Deborah A. Nelson, a Certified Fund Raising Executive with two decades of experience in the nonprofit sector, has been appointed to the District 214 Education Foundation Board of Trustees.

Nelson, an alumna of John Hersey High School, also will serve as the Alumni Advisory Chair, helping coordinate the Alumni Advisory Council and District-level alumni initiatives. An Arlington Heights resident, Nelson also is Vice President of the Board of Library Trustees of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board. She has served development campaigns for cultural and educational institutions across the United States, including Harvard University, The Art Institute of Chicago and Santa Barbara Zoo.

This fall, she will volunteer as a career coach at Hersey, where her daughter will be a senior. Her younger son is a future student of Hersey’s Career Life Skills program.

“I am honored and excited to join the District 214 Education Foundation Board and work broadly toward student success and specifically on alumni relations,” Nelson said. “Hersey, and District 214, were influential in my life, and are now impacting the life of my children. I am so happy to give back.”

Nelson is a graduate of Lake Forest College with degrees in English and Spanish.

The District 214 Education Foundation replaces the former Community Education Foundation, supporting student success, innovation and lifelong learning in all 10 District 214 schools and programs across eight communities, as well as District community programming that impacts generations through education.

The Foundation is the first 501(c)(3) opportunity to address needs District-wide in a time when nearly 30 percent of District 214 students are living in poverty and the future of state funding for public education is uncertain.

Other members of the Foundation Board include: Glenn Scoggins (Chair), community volunteer; Carl Anfenson (Vice Chair), Senior Vice President, MB Financial Bank; Jim Galetano (Secretary), Senior Vice President, Paddock Publications; John Eilering (Treasurer), President, Mount Prospect State Bank; Tony Guido, General Manager, Arlington Heights Ford; Cliff Higley, Owner, U Keep Us in Stitches; Maureen Jennings McKenna, Regional Human Resources Manager, ZF Services North America, LLC; John O’Conner III, Partner, Drost, Kivlahan, McMahon & O’Connor; and Miriam (Mimi) Cooper (Ex-Officio/Board of Education Representative), Attorney, Law Offices of Miriam Cooper.
