U.S Department of Education | Blue Ribbon School District

Truancy

All students are required by law to attend school until they reach the age of 16. The staff and administration of District 214 believe that a high school diploma is necessary for the future of a young adult. In order to graduate, a student must be in attendance. If a student has been truant in one of our schools, the parent/guardian will be contacted by the attendance office, teachers, or counselors. Parents/guardians may also obtain assistance in dealing with truancy or other problems by contacting the counselor or dean for a review of available services.

*Substance Abuse

When evidence indicates that a student possesses, has purchased, used, sold, or is under the influence of an illegal substance or possesses drug paraphernalia, or look-alike drugs while on school grounds or at a school sponsored activity, the student will be suspended.

In such cases, the student(s) and his/her/their parent/guardians shall meet with the principal/director or his/her designee as soon as possible. The principal/director or designee shall submit a written report to the assistant superintendent for student services describing the details of the incident, the consequences provided, and the plan of remediation. In addition, a report will be made to the local law enforcement officials.

The school Student Screening Committee will convene in order to review the student's situation, review the details leading to suspension, and plan a remediation program. Remediation programs may involve suspension, drug assessments, expulsion, or referral to law agencies. In cases involving the distribution of illegal substances, the Student Screening Committee may recommend expulsion, regardless of the number of previous violations.

*Medication

The responsibility for administering student medication rests solely with the parents or guardian. All medication should be taken at home under parental supervision. In exceptional cases, when medication must be taken during the school day, parents should contact the school nurse for guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
