On behalf of the Board of Education, welcome to High School District 214!

As an alumnus of John Hersey High School, I am truly honored to serve as the President of the Board, helping guide innovation and student success.

All six of our comprehensive high schools have repeatedly earned recognition as some of the state's best and most challenging from U.S. News & World Report  and The Washington Post, and every school has been designated a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.

That doesn't happen accidentally.

Our educators work every day to ensure our students are prepared for success well beyond high school, developing innovative career pathways that expose students to a wide range of opportunities and challenge their intellectual curiosity; creating collaborative learning environments that allow our students to share their ideas and learn from their peers; and transforming learning through technology.

Our unique internship program has put our students in real-world work environments for nearly 2 million hours since it began, and has earned White House recognition. Educational leaders have noted that "the eyes of the teaching profession" are on District 214 because of our innovative Educator Prep program, which seeks to identify and empower our next generation of teachers. And our nanotechnology lab at Wheeling High School was lauded as a model for the nation by then-U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan during the launch.

Our work is student-focused and educator-driven, shaped by innovation that is helping transform the national dialogue on public education. In 2016, District 214 helped launch Redefining Ready! in partnership with AASA, The School Superintendents Association, in an effort to redefine how our students are considered college, career and life ready. This is a research-based, multi-metric approach to readiness that considers factors like success in advanced placement and dual credit classes; attendance; and participation in co-curricular activities. We know our students should not be defined by a single score on a single test.

Redefining Ready! has become a movement, earning endorsements nationwide as we work to use those metrics to shape individual state's readiness plans.

Our Board of Education is so proud of this District and all those who help to ensure we continue our established tradition of excellence. Our employees, students, parents, business and community partners, alumni and retirees are what truly make District 214 a destination district.

Sincerely,

Todd Younger
