Turning on the Readability Feature in Microsoft Word
The readability feature allows you to check the reading grade level of text.  To turn this feature on:

1. Open a Word document.

2. From the menu bar, click Word -- Preferences.

3. In the  Authoring and Proofing Tools section click the Spelling and Grammar icon.
    In the Spelling and Grammar window, under the grammar section, check the box that says Show readability statistics.
    Click the OK button.

4. To use the readability feature, highlight the material in your document for which you want a readability score.
     Do not include your title and heading.
     (You can also copy and paste text from the internet or other source).

5. From the menu bar, click Tools -- Spelling and Grammar.

6. After the spelling check and grammar check are finished, a message will appear asking if you want to check the rest of the document.
    Answer No.

The Readability Statistics box will appear. The grade level is the last item listed.
